Las Vegas Sands

Standing Out From the Crowd with Industry-Leading Sustainability

  • The Challenge

The Venetian Macao is the largest single structure hotel
building in Asia and seventh-largest building in the world
by floor area, while Marina Bay Sands is among the world’s most expensive and complex buildings, costing over
    US$ 5.7 billion to build.

These two Las Vegas Sands (LVS) properties in Asia
wanted to raise their brand profiles and reduce operating costs by positioning themselves as world leaders in sustainable operations.

In August 2013, LVS selected MCI as a strategic partner for the implementation of a new performance management solution across both properties.

  • The Solution

Together, we identified ISO20121, an international standard designed by the International Organization for Standardization, as the framework to continuously improve sustainability
and operational performance throughout the entire event management cycle.

To achieve certification to the standard, our sustainability experts designed and developed an innovative event management system and worked with LVS’ global and regional teams to integrate the ISO approach into the comprehensive Sands ECO360° Meetings Program and
    their daily operations.

We also worked with the LVS team to design cross-facility training for over 15,000 staff and improve the resorts’ monitoring and reporting system.

By providing tailored communication and marketing support, our experts helped LVS to leverage its industry-leading approach to sustainability and build this key differentiator into brand communications.

  • Results

In January 2014, after a remarkably short eight months, Marina Bay Sands became the first integrated resort in Southeast Asia to obtain the ISO20121 certification, with The Venetian Macao following suit in March 2014.

Marina Bay Sands is not only notable as a driver of innovation in the region, it is also the world’s largest MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and events) property in the world to be certified ISO20121 compliant – a key achievement for a complex property of its scale.

Increased monitoring and measurement have significantly enhanced performance in recycling, energy and water consumption in both properties.

Both properties have also become the venues of choice for environmental, social and governance (ESG) events in the region and are enjoying increased brand recognition, both locally and globally.

In May 2014, The Venetian Macao’s sustainability achievements were recognised with the prestigious IMEX-GMIC Green Supplier Award. Marina Bay Sands went on to receive the same award for outstanding sustainability performance at IMEX 2015.
